Northwest Indiana Sites

Karner Blue Karner Blue Northwest Indiana provides a variety of habitats for butterflies including the federally endangered Karner blue. We are attempting to compliment the information gathered through the Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network by including monitoring sites in adjacent northwest Indiana. There are presently five monitoring sites in Lake County and three monitoring sites in Porter County. These sites represent the unique geography and ecology of the Calumet region including oak savanna, dune and swale, lake plain, sedge meadow and wet prairie, restored woodland and tallgrass prairie. Several butterflies rarely reported from Illinois have been added to the IBMN database. There is a great opportunity available for interested monitors to help collect information on the butterflies found in northwest Indiana.
